"More Impossible Things"

One hundred years ago, lasers, TVs, nuclear-bombs--all were thought impossible. And yet, now we know better.

Some scientists are now speculating on which impossible things could be achieved in the next century, millenia, or never.

How should religious liberals think about shaping the future of discovery?

The sermon is delivered by the Reverend Dr. Daniel O'Connell.

"The Continuing Evolution of Human Nature"

It is easy to forget we humans are animals. Or that the evolution that has shaped us as hunter-gatherers and farmers for the last 10,000 years is more deeply embedded in our psyche than the last 500 years of technology. Part of us is hard-wired to carry out an evolutionary mission that determines much of what we do. What is a reasonable liberal religious response?

Today's sermon is delivered by the Reverend Dr. Daniel O'Connell.

"Six Theological Mistakes"

Describe the God you don't believe in and I probably don't believe in that God either. Omnipotent, omniscient, and omnipresent are characteristics of God that major 20th century theologians rejected.
So what kind of God does that leave?

"Pursuit of Happiness"

When an unhappy American wrote his government that it was failing to make him happy, Benjamin Franklin is reported having written back, "The constitution only gives you the right to pursue happiness. You have to catch it yourself." What is a reasonable expectation of government when it comes to making us happy? Or protecting us from others? Or from ourselves?

This Tuesday, we get to exercise our sacred democratic process.

"The Paradox of Choice"

Over the next couple of weeks we will be choosing a future for our building. Basically, we have four choices. If only the rest of our lives were so easy. It turns out much of modern production from food to cars to 401(k) plans is designed to give us more choice, which leads to less satisfaction. We'll look at ways to deal with this.

"Politics and Social Action At Eliot Chapel"

Some people say politics ought to be kept out of church; others say that social action is inherently political and that we must choose. Unitarians tend to trust democratic decision-making in ordinary church work, but not so much when it comes to politics because we want to encourage diversity. How to unstick this wicket?

There's an old saying, "Don't mind the mules, just load the wagon." We have been doing just that on US farms for a long time now, and the consequences to animals, the environment and human health are staggering. "Credo."

NPR's popular radio show "This I Believe" gives people the chance to craft a statement that expresses the guiding principles of their lives.

Sometimes they use traditional religious language, sometimes not.

When did you last consider your credo?
